About Dr. Margaret Norris
Dr. Margaret J. Matson Norris, author of My Beloved Journey: Faith, Family, Fortitude, is a divorced mother of three sons, motivational speaker, and educational consultant. She is committed to fighting for social justice, breaking barriers of systemic racism, and building bridges of peace and unity.
Her expertise stems from personal and professional experiences, having raised her sons from boys to men during the turbulent drug war years of the 1980’s and 1990’s while working as an educator and community servant, detailed in her memoir, My Beloved Journey: Faith, Family, Fortitude, and her dissertation, An Analysis of Implementing and Sustaining a Violence Prevention Program in a Continuation High School.
Her memoir illustrates the sacrifices of parenting, the benefits of servant leadership, and the art of blending the responsibilities that come with each. Spanning a career of over forty-five years, Dr. Norris, retired educator, has mediated conflicts between gang members, consoled families victimized by violence, and has designed curriculum and taught classes in violence prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation to men incarcerated in federal and state penitentiaries, county jails, and youth in the juvenile justice system.
Dr. Norris has received commendations for her leadership from former President of the United States, William Jefferson Clinton, the California Legislature, former California Governor Gray Davis, Oprah Winfrey, and a host of organizations, including, but not limited to, the California Broadcasters Association, Emerge Magazine, Ladies Home Journal, American Diabetes Association, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and City Flight Magazine’s 10 Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area.
A woman of faith, Dr. Norris fights for social justice, racial equity, and educational excellence through her memberships in Cascade United Methodist Church of Atlanta, Georgia, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gwinnett Democratic Women, National Council of Negro Women, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and United Negro College Fund.
